Run for Refuge

Were you secretly happy you got a rejection letter from London recently (I know I would have been!), or were you totally gutted?! Well if it was the latter don’t despair just yet. The club is allocated a couple of spaces each year and those with a rejection letter are put into a pot and the ones picked out get the places. And there’s another alternative that’s just been brought to my attention (thanks Nick!): run for charity. Refuge to be precise. Refuge are “the country’s leading single provider of emergency accommodation and specialist support for women and children experiencing domestic violence”. If you’d like to run in London or Brighton for them please contact  jessica_madeley@refuge.org.uk.

Help out at Truro Race for Life this July

Race for Life 2011 – Volunteer Opportunities – Truro Race for Life

Race for Life/Tesco heart logoTRC’s chairman Keith Wotton will once again be organising this year’s Truro Race for Life at Richard Lander School on Sunday 24th July at 11am.

Due to the hard work and support of all of our volunteers at last year’s event, the Truro Race for Life was a great success and raised over £64,800 in sponsorship money for Cancer Research UK.

We really couldn’t achieve such great results if we didn’t have the support and dedication of people who help out each year, and Keith would like to extend the invitation to anyone who would like to get involved with volunteering at this year’s Truro Race for Life.

This year’s Truro Race for Life is on Sunday 24th July at 11am and there are a number of roles you can volunteer for, including course marshal, finish funnel volunteer, admin area volunteer, pre-event and key set-up volunteers

If you would like to volunteer please click on the link below to register (there is also plenty of information regarding volunteer roles at the events on this webpage):

http://www.raceforlife.org/support-race-for-life/volunteer.aspx

If you are volunteering as part of a group (e.g. running club, lions, Ladies Circle etc) please make sure that you state this under ‘organisation name’.

Registering on-line will mean that you will not have to fill-in a declaration form on the day of the event.

If you have any other queries, please contact Keith direct.

Every day, around 80 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South West. Race for Life started in 1994. At the time, many people diagnosed with cancer did not survive.  But over the last 16 years, money generated by Race for Life has supported Cancer Research UK’s work and now the overall death rate for the disease has dropped by 15 per cent.

We have a number of events taking place locally this year (see below), and if you would like to get involved with any of these, please check out the website or contact me direct:

  • Falmouth – Gyllyngvase Car Park: Sunday 15th May, 11am
  • Truro – Richard Lander School: Sunday 24th July, 11am

Thank you!

Now that’s a challenge!

Challenge66 is coming to Cornwall!

Challenge66 will see Andy McMenemy, the son of a former soldier, establish a new Guinness World Record for consecutive ultra marathons (50km) with no rest days. Andy will run 66 Ultra Marathons in 66 Days, one from each of the 66 official Cities in the United Kingdom, to raise money for the ABF The Soldier’s Charity.

Andy is due to arrive in Truro from Plymouth on Saturday 9th April when he’ll give a talk on his training and progress at the Hall for Cornwall (time to be confirmed, entry by donation).  The next day, Sunday 10th April, he begins his 26th run from Boscawen Park between 8am and 9am. Everyone is welcome to go along on either day to find out more about his incredible feat of endurance and show support as he starts off on his next leg.

More details can be found on the Challenge66 website.
